Five top tips to keep your dog safe this winter
For this week’s blog and as we roll into the deep dark depths of Winter, I thought it wouldn’t be a terrible idea to get some advice out about keeping your dogs happy and healthy.
Tip 1: Invest in a Dog Light
As we walk in the dark, we recommend investing in a flashing collar or light attachment for your dog. This ensures your dog is 100% visible to other dog owners and people in cars. This is a good option available to buy on amazon.
Tip 2: Be careful about leaving your dog in the car
Just like your car can act as an oven in the summer, it can also act as a fridge in the winter, locking in cold temperatures. If you are planning on leaving your dog in the car, bring some blankets so your dog can burrow down and stay warm. Try to be an hour at maximum. If your dog is short-haired, it’s always best to leave them at home rather than in the car.
Tip 3: Be wary of anti-freeze
Antifreeze has a smell and tastes our dogs are attracted to, which is dangerous as it takes only a tiny amount to be ingested for severe poisoning. Keep well out of reach if stored in your car or home.
Tip 4: Feed your dog a little bit more
Just like humans, dogs burn extra calories in the cold. Feeding your pet a little bit more during the cold weather can provide much-needed calories, and ensuring they have plenty of water to drink will help keep them well-hydrated and their skin less dry.
Tip 5: Wipe down after walks
Be sure you wipe your dog’s legs, feet and stomach after a walk, as grit from the roads and dampness from rain or snow can cause stinging and irritated skin and paws.
